On 14 January Dr Floris Meens (Radbout University) will speak about 'How to approach salons? A fin de siècle Italian case study.' during the Utrecht Seminar for Cultural History. This meeting, initially scheduled on 3 December 2015, has been moved to 14 January 2016.

Salons played a vital part in European culture between the late 15th / early 16th century and the early decades of the 20th century. The salons were essential to the communication of elites and therefore for the transition of ideas. There is much debate on the composition of the salons, in particular on the role of women, the nobility, the bourgeoisie and different nationalities. Meens will present an approach to salons that combines quantitative and qualitative methods. His paper will focus on an Italian fin de siècle case study: the salon of Ersilia Caetani-Lovatelli (1840-1925), which flourished between 1870 and 1915.
