Philosopher Thomas Mertens.
After the attacks in Paris and Beirout, the question whether or not to intervene militarily in Syria, is high on the political agenda again.
Quite a few people are inclined to answer this question affirmatively. Influential in this regard is the tradition of just war thinking. In the 18th century, philosopher Immanuel Kant strongly mistrusted the idea of a just war. Is there still reason for this hesitation? The German weekly Die Zeit recently asked: “Was nun, Herr Kant?”
What should be done in the face of the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in the Middle East?
