 Prof. dr. Anthony Atala is a world renowned scientist in the field of tissue engineering and printable organs. He is director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (North Carolina, USA). In 2006, he managed to create the world's first lab-grown organ - a bladder - and was able to successfully transplant it into a human being. Atala’s Wake Institute is currently working on the development of more than 30 different organs and tissues in the laboratory, including insulin-producing cells and blood vessels for heart bypass surgery. Atala’s latest invention is a modified 3D ink-jet printer capable of printing organs.

The program is chaired by Prof. dr. ir. Peter-Paul Verbeek, full professor of Philosophy of Technology at the UT. Verbeek and Atala will discuss ethical issues related to tissue engineering.
